How do I complete the FAFSA form?

It is recommended you complete the FAFSA form online fafsa.gov

  • has built-in help to guide you through the application process;
  • uses “skip logic” that allows you to skip questions that don’t apply to you;
  • has an IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) that allows you to import your IRS tax information with a few clicks and
  • the schools you list on your application will receive your processed information faster.

When do I submit the FAFSA form? Which FAFSA form should I submit?

Your financial aid award is determined according to when you attend school. Each fiscal year (July 1-June 30) you must complete a new FAFSA form. The following table provides a summary of dates for when you need to apply.

Iowa Residents: The filing deadline to be considered for the Iowa Tuition Grant during the 2019.20 Academic year is July 1, 2019.

What information do I need in order to complete the FAFSA form?

FSA ID: This is a username and password you will need in order to sign your FAFSA form electronically. The FSA ID is also needed to electronically sign a Master Promissory Note if you take out loans.

Income and tax return information: If you complete the form online at fafsa.gov, the IRS Data Retrieval Tool will allow you to import your IRS tax information with a few clicks.

School Selection: Even if you have not been accepted yet it does not hurt your application to add a school. If you forget a school when you complete your FAFSA form you can add it later if needed. IW Online’s school code is 001871.

If you filed a FAFSA form last year you will see a “FAFSA Renewal” button. Selecting this option will allow you to prefill the new form with certain information and complete the application in less time.

How do I create and use an FSA ID?

Go to https://studentaid.gov/fsaid in order to create your FSA ID. You will need your Social Security Number (SSN) in order to create an FSA ID. If you do not have a SSN you’ll have to select the option to print a signature page at the end of your FAFSA form. What happens after I apply?

After you submit your FAFSA form allow 24 hours for the Financial Aid Office to receive your application. You must be registered for classes with IW Online in order to receive a financial aid award. Your financial aid award letter will be sent to you directly by the Financial Aid Office.
